Replacement Tyres - Selection |
Every Vehicle has well defined mechanical and load / speed characteristics and choice of Tyres for the Vehicle and Tyre manufacturers are technically competent to make this choice. There fore, when replacing tyres,it is essential to fit the sizes and type identical to those fitted on the machine originally. |
Tyre Fitting and Removal : |
It is recommended that tyre fitting and removal be entrusted to a specialist who has the necessary equipment and expertise. The following points should be noted. |
Wheels : |
Ensure that rim band on spoked wheel is in good condition. |
Check for damages or sharp edges.damaged and distorted wheels must not be repaired or used in service. |
Divided Wheels : |
Divided Wheels are so constructed that their two main parts, when securely fastened fastened together, combine to form a rim having two fixed flanges. |
1. |
The demounting sequence of the Wheel / tyre from divided wheels should be as below ;. |
Deflating of the tyre completely. |
Demounting of the wheel from vehicle. |
Disconnecting the two wheel parts and then demounting the Tyres. |
Tyre Removal : |
Before removal, check that there is no danger of the tyre brusting due to damage,(cuts, bulges etc.) |
Always remove valve core to ensure complete deflation before tyre removal. |
Valve core and cap must be kept away from dirt, grit and other contaminants. |
Tyre Fitment : |
Ensure rim is correct for the tyre size. |
Remove all contamination like dirt, grease, rust, foreign material etc. |
If rim is cracked or deformed it must be replaced. |
Edge of valve hole on tube side must be rounded and smooth. |
Tyre bead should be lubricated mildly only with thin solution of vegetable oil, soap or approved tyre lubricants. |
Silicon and Hydrocarbon must not be used : |
Tube may be dusted slightly with chalk powder . |
Take note of any directional arrow on the side walls of the tyres. |
Ensure that beads are correctly located on rim flanges. |
For safety reasons, always use a new tube of correct size marking when fitting a new tyre. |
Always fit inner tube on a spoked rim, with a rim band. |
After mounting tyre, ensure that the securing nuts are tight before inflation. |
Guidelines for rotation when starting with full set of new Tyres. Scooter / 3 Wheeler |

Rotation of tyres in a vehicle is recommended for uniform pattern wear on all the wheel positions to achieve optimum Tyre Life. |
It is preferred that rotation is carried out at every 5000 kms. However in case of any sign of uneven wear, rotation can be done earlier . |
Prior to rotation , it is advisable to check the vehicle alignment , condition of suspension etcparticularly for the positions where uneven wear is observed. |
In case uneven wear is severe , particularly inner shoulders of the tyres , it is recommended to remove tyres from rim and fit them by reversing the shoulders , in order to bring worn-out inner shoulders towards outside wheel , following any of the rotation plan mentioned above can be opted. |
In case of any difficulty or doubt, assistance from the qualified technical service personnelshould be sought to achieve desired results . |
Motorcycle / Moped : |
No interchange of tyres from front to Rear is recommended if a Rib tyre is used in front and studded pattern tyre at the rear position.
Where identical tyres are fitted to both front and rear axles, interchange the position if uneven tyre wear noticed. |
Inflation Pressure : |
It is dangerous to ride with underinflated / overinflated tyres. The effects of underinflated / overinflated tyres are not necessarily immediate. |
Inflation pressure must be checked once a fortnight using an accurate pressure gauge. |
Tyre pressure must be checked when cold.Pressure can increase upto 20% or more during running. |
Do not check and reduce pressure under hot condition. |
For sustained riding or when riding with heavy loads, the cold inflation pressure must be increased by about 4Psi. |
Given Below is how a tire appears in various stages of inflation when it’s on your vehicle: |
UNDER INFLATION |
PROPER INFLATION |
OVER INFLATION |
Tyre Minimum Tread Depth : |
The tyre is provided with a tread pattern,to ensure maximum grip on wet or slippery road,
For a particular tyre under given condition, road grip progressively decreases with tyre wear. |
Reduce Speeds on wet Roads Accordingly : |
When tread pattern reaches T W I identification mark replace the tyre. |
Tyre Damage / Repair : |
Do not neglect tyre damage. |
Remove any stonee or nails which may be embedded in the tyre tread. |
Routinely examine the tyre for blister, rupture or cut especially after any violent impact against stone or kerb. |
If a repair to the tyre is necessary and possible it must be done immediately by repair specialists. |
Before any repair is carried out,the inside of the tyre must be carefully examined for secondary damages. |
